On March 17, Wraptor Restaurant and Bar, located at 358 Columbia Street, hosted its second movie night. A small but enthusiastic group of customers watched Premium Rush while enjoying good food.

After starting off behind the scenes and cooking, Wraptor’s owner, Enrique Barranco, joined us to watch the movie. It was a relaxed atmosphere, and everyone who watched chatted with each other throughout the movie.

The movie was exciting in part because there was a lot of action, but also because it took place in New York City, and we knew the places where different scenes took place. While watching, I got my favorite meal, the pan-seared salmon with mashed potatoes and veggies, which, like Movie Night, is becoming a tradition for me.

While I sat at a table, friends Mike and Lou watched the movie at the bar, as they caught up with each other.

“I’m a local guy, and I love great food,” said Mike. “I’m a foodie, and I usually hop from restaurant to restaurant, but I love Wraptor. I’m here almost every other night. The food is great, and so are the portions. I love the traditional celebrations that Enrique has here. Usually, I don’t sit through movies, but this was action-packed and had all of the scenes with local spots in it, so I really enjoyed it.

“I feel so comfortable when I’m at Wraptor. It feels like I’m at home. I’ve gotten to know Enrique and the others. I can’t beat it because I feel secure and I feel calm when I’m here. I live a very active life, so this is my getaway.”

Barranco is also planning to have special celebrations for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Labor Day, a Community Appreciation Day in August, and the anniversary of Wraptor’s opening, which will take place in June.

Helping out musicians
During the movie, musicians Aidan and Greg, who had been practicing downstairs, came up and watched part of the movie.

“The first time I met them, they had said they wanted to get food but didn’t have enough money, and it was about 10 at night,” Barranco said. “I got them some food and said, ‘Listen, why don’t you play here and don’t worry about the money?’ That’s how they got started playing here, and now they play here on Thursday evenings.”

Barranco is always looking for ways that Wraptor can help the community, and Wraptor has lots of community events.

“We have lots of different events, and there are talented people here like Jeremy [who directed Secret Mall Apartment, which we watched at Wraptor Last Month], and I’m very proud of him and happy for all of his success. We try to have celebrations for the start of spring and the different holidays, and we have happy hours for customers. We have a community refrigerator in the back, and we always have some food and something to drink. It’s tough to survive and get business in this area, so I try to help people just like other people try to help me.”

Art this autumn

It’s that time of year when the artists, well-rested from the summer, spur to action—ready to fill our evenings and weekends with plays, movies, exhibits, and everything else they’ve dreamt up over the warmer months.  Theater At Target Margin Theater in Sunset Park, The Nonsense Lab runs from Sept. 17 through Oct. 3, “a three-week performance festival of new work

All she wanted was to be a swimmer

I go to the Red Hook Rec Center most mornings (or at least I try to). The staff are fantastic. The other members are welcoming. And the price? $75 for half a year—unbeatable.  This summer, I wanted to get into the best shape of my life. I pictured myself transforming into a fit spy à la Jennifer Lawrence’s ballerina turned

A year since the vote: What has happened at the BMT?

In September of 2025, 25 members of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal Task Force gathered alongside staff of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to vote on the vision plan that was to guide the redevelopment of the waterfront site.  Huddled inside an office building at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT), the task force approved the vision plan with

The many renovation projects at Red Hook Rec Center

Following another year where the Red Hook pool was closed to open the summer and the recreation center too was closed for a (brief) period in August, concerns have been renewed among some area residents that the city could potentially close the complex completely. But concerns might be overblown, as the 90-year-old pool and rec center are set to undergo
