NYPD Investigative Encounters Tracker

Welcome to the Red Hook Star-Revue NYPD Investigative Encounters Tracker. Since the How Many Stops Act went into effect in the summer of 2024, the NYPD must collect and report data on three levels of investigative encounters (interactions between a police officer and a civilian “for a law enforcement or investigative purpose”). A level one encounter is when police request information from a person without suspecting them of a crime; a level two encounter means the officer has begun to suspect that the person has committed a crime; and a level three encounter means an officer has a reasonable suspicion that a member of the public has committed, is committing, or is about to commit a crime.

In this tracker, we visualize the raw data, for the public, lawmakers, and other news outlets to use. We will continue to update the tracker as new data comes in.

Notes:

  • You can toggle between maps and bar graph by pressing the “buttons” at the top of the graphics.
  • Due to limitations in Datawrapper, the data from the 105th and 116th Precincts has been combined in all maps.
  • Data for all precincts is available on the NYPD’s website. For now, we only provide precinct-specific race-related data from the 76th Precinct, but will add more in the future.

City-wide:
