The T.J. Martell Foundation Gala: Giving Back Through Music

TJ Martell Foundation: The Fight Against Cancer

Cancer remains one of the most prevalent and devastating diseases worldwide, affecting countless lives. Cancer research plays a pivotal role in unraveling the complexities of this formidable illness.

In the month of July, the T.J. Martell Foundation, a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to funding innovative cancer research, orchestrated its awe-inspiring fundraising event, the first since 2019.

The T.J. Martell Gala marked a significant milestone as it was the first large-scale gathering since the pandemic. The impactful endeavors of the T.J. Martell Foundation over the years have brought out prominent figures.

This year, the gala also brought out popular musical acts, including the talented rising stars Coco Jones, Omar Apollo, and the renowned Brandy Clark, who all graced the stage delivering beautiful performances.

The T.J. Martell Foundation: A Legacy of Impact

With a history spanning several decades, the T.J. Martell Foundation has carved a name for itself as a leading force in the fight against cancer. Established in 1975 by music industry executive Tony Martell and his colleagues in honor of his son T.J., who died of leukemia. Since its inception, the legacy of T.J. has been central to the foundation’s work to raise awareness and over 280 million dollars for cancer research.

The Stars Were Out

The presence of distinguished personalities added further power and reach to the event. Among them was Ryan Coogler, director of the critically acclaimed film Black Panther. Coogler’s attendance served as a reminder of the power of art and entertainment in spreading awareness and driving change. His passionate speech emphasized the need for continued support and collaboration in the fight against cancer. Coogler is also no stranger to the devastating effects of cancer. In August 2020 the world said goodbye to Black Panther lead actor, Chadwick Boseman, who also battled with cancer.

The Power of Music

Throughout the years, the T.J. Martell Foundation has recognized the immense influence of music in bringing people together, the foundation has harnessed the power of art to raise funds, spread awareness, and inspire hope. By establishing partnerships with influential figures like Def Jam record executive Tunji Balogun, and organizations within the music industry, the foundation has managed to create a substantial impact in the field of cancer research.

At the gala, recording artist Coco Jones, captivated the audience with a standout performance of her hit single, “ICU.” Brandy Clark and Omar Apollo also delivered beautiful performances of their own, adding to the energy of elegance and community at the foundation’s annual gala.

That night I spoke to Universal Music VP and T.J. Martell Foundation Chairman, Steve Gawley, Foundation Chairman John Esposito, and recording artists Coco Jones and Omar Apollo who all shared thoughts about the gala and its impact. My interviews below.

Roderick Thomas: How important is this event to you, and to this music business?

Steve Gawley: This is such a special event for the music community, this business is competitive, but here we come together.

Roderick: This is the first event since the Pandemic, how are you feeling about the turnout?

Steve Gawley: The turnout is amazing! So many people were trying to get tickets at the last minute as well.

Steve Gawley: You know, I entered into the music industry quite young and always wanted to give back, I couldn’t think of any better way to bring folks together for such a special cause.

Roderick Thomas: Coco, you look amazing! Your single “ICU” is doing so well right now. How does it feel to be here tonight?

Coco Jones: Thank you. I feel like we are all so blessed to be here. I think making whatever it is that you do have a reason that is bigger than yourself gives more meaning and purpose to life. It’s an honor to be here, really.

Roderick: So what can you tell us about upcoming music and acting?

Coco Jones: Everything, hello? [laughs] I’m really excited to drop visuals for my EP and the next season of Bel Air. Stay tuned!

Roderick: Thanks, Coco!

T.J. Martell Foundation Chairman, John Esposito

Roderick Thomas: It’s been four years without this gala, how do you feel about the turnout tonight? There are so many people here.

John Esposito: I don’t know how much time you have [laughs], but the time without this event I consider the dark ages, so I’m so excited for tonight’s turnout and the performances. I missed the speeches and the intimate performances, seriously. I probably go to 100 concerts a year, I love music, and this is a pretty special musical event for me and for the music community.

Roderick: Can you name one performance that stands out to you over the years?

John Esposito: It’s been nearly 30 years since I’ve been coming to this gala, there have been so many. At the moment though, I would say Luther Vandross.

Recording Artist, Omar Apollo

Roderick Thomas: Mr. Apollo, how does it feel to be performing tonight?

Omar Apollo: It feels great to be performing for such a special cause, I had to be here, I had to be part of this.

Roderick: Can you tell us what you’re singing tonight?

Omar Apollo: En El Olvido, it’s a Spanish song, something heartfelt, maybe a little different for the crowd.

Roderick: Looking forward to it!

Omar Apollo: I like your jacket.

Roderick: Thank you! On that note, what are you wearing?

Omar Apollo: It’s Ferragamo, you know.

Roderick: Ok, I see, Ferragamo down.

Omar Apollo: [Laughs] Ferragamo down to the shoes.

Roderick: I know you’re going to do an amazing job tonight. Thank you, Apollo.

Omar Apollo: Thank you.
