School will be starting before you know it, by Asar John

As the 2025-26 school year is just weeks away, schools in and around Red Hook are gearing up to welcome new and returning students to their classrooms and halls. In anticipation for the academic year, Red Hook Star-Revue has a guide for parents to navigate information about area schools regarding registration and curricula.

Summit Academy – 27 Huntington St., Grades 6-12
Summit Academy is another Red Hook charter school, boasting a surplus of teaching time dedicated to literacy and math (two hours per day), college prep courses and Regents level courses offered to its 8th grade students. For its high school students, the school partners with a St. Francis College program that allows students to take Algebra II for college credits. Registration forms for Summit were due on May 13. Many forms required for registration at Summit include those related to health records, identifying demographic information and more.

P.S. 29 (Cobble Hill) – Grades PreK – 5, 425 Henry Street
P.S. 29 in Cobble Hill follows the New York City Department of Education’s admissions process since it’s a public school. According to the DOE website, applications for the PreK and Kindergarten closed in the winter, but waitlists are still active until Friday, Sept. 19, 2025.

Once a child has been accepted into the school, staff will contact a parent to set up a registration appointment. P.S. 29 provides a checklist of required materials for the registration appointment, including immunization records and proof of address. Parents are also required to fill out a digital, six page registration form prior to the appointment. Contact information requested in the form will be used for communication from school staff, including notifications regarding class assignments. If a parent has more than one child attending P.S. 29 this year, they must fill out a separate form for each individual child.

Parents are encouraged to email the school’s Parent Coordinator, Janet Cavanagh ([email protected]), or the school’s Pupil Secretary, Sari Melendez ([email protected]), for help with the form.

PS 15 Patrick F. Daly Magnet School of the Arts, 71 Sullivan St. – 3K to Grade 5
P.S. 15 declares emphasis on its “trans-disciplinary” approach to teaching, where teachers identify the link between all core subject areas. Once parents of prospective students have applied, they should anticipate a notice for enrollment, receive an offer letter from the school and then come into the school to fill out registration information. Parents must submit an emergency contact form, proof of age, residency and immunization records, if available. Parent Coordinator Melissa Campbell encourages parents to visit or call the school to inquire about any additional seating available in classrooms. Registration forms for P.S. 15 are available in 10 different languages.

PS 676 – Harbor Middle School, 27 Huntington St. Grades 6–8
Harbor Middle School (PS 676) is known for its interdisciplinary STEAM (science and math) and Humanities programs with a maritime theme. This is the first year the campus will be fully middle school students, as it transitions to become Harbor Middle School, and graduated its last class of elementary students in June. Pupils at Harbor practice their studies through “Missions,” which are long term projects that grant students the opportunity to interact with community partners. Some of these partners include well known institutions such as the Red Hook Initiative and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

BASIS Independent Brooklyn (Upper School) – 556 Columbia Street, Grades 3—12
BASIS Independent Brooklyn’s Upper School is located in Red Hook, just blocks away from IKEA. The institution requires AP coursework for all high school students, making it available as students enter the 9th grade. The school is still accepting applications for the upcoming academic year, on a rolling basis. Applications for next school year, 2026-27 will open on Aug. 1. Tuition for BASIS is $43,000.

P.S. 58 (Carroll Gardens) – Grades PreK–5, 330 Smith Street
P.S. 58 is just next door in Carroll Gardens, priding itself on its offerings of French/English Dual Language, residency enrichment and enhanced literary programs.

For enrolled students, parents must first accept the enrollment offer from P.S. 58 in the MySchools online portal. A welcome letter will then be sent with an access code to the school’s Operoo/School Status system, (a website used to send and store digital forms). Once an account is created for Operoo, necessary forms for registration should be uploaded, including proof of address and age, immunization forms and a student’s most recent report card. Class placement for students will be sent in August through the Operoo system.
