Sports: MiniBar dominates RH Softball, by Brian Abate

The Red Hook Locals Softball League began May with a double header. MiniBar took on the Wobblies in a battle of two undefeated teams. MiniBar scored a couple of runs in the first inning, and great pitching by Joe “Fish” and some smooth defensive plays helped them maintain the lead into the 6th. In the top of the 6th, MiniBar scored three runs, and though the Wobblies scored two in the bottom of the inning, MiniBar won 5-2 and improved to 3-0 while the Wobblies dropped to 2-1.

At Field 1, B61 took on Bait & Tackle. Though one of those two teams has won the championship in each of the last three seasons, they both entered the game winless. Bait jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but B61 strung singles together and scored three in the bottom of the third. Bait loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth, but Shawn Andrew made some big pitches and escaped the jam without giving up any runs. B61 tacked on 2 more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bait threatened in the top of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but a nice running catch by Lee in left field preserved a 6-3 victory for B61. B61 improved to 1-2 while Bait dropped to 0-3.

On May 8, the Wobblies got some revenge on B61 in a rematch of last year’s championship. The Wobblies jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in an 8-4 victory. On Field 1, MiniBar continued their impressive turnaround from last season and shut out the usually high-powered offense of the Record Shop. MiniBar won 5-0 to remain undefeated.

On May 12, Hometown and B61 put on an impressive offensive display as Hometown crushed three homers including one to lead off the first inning. Hometown hit a pair of homers in the third and also had a triple which helped them take a commanding 9-1 lead. B61 cut into the lead with a clutch triple and a three-run homer but Hometown held and won 11-8 for their first win of the season.

On May 15, the Record Shop took on the Wobblies in a matchup featuring two impressive offenses, but it turned into a pitcher’s duel. The Wobblies jumped out to an early 5-2 lead and led 7-4 going into the seventh inning. After quickly getting two outs, a single and a walk brought the tying run to the plate for the Record Shop. However, a groundout to third ended the game as the Wobblies improved to 4-1 while the Record Shop dropped to 3-2.

On May 19, MiniBar continued its impressive start to the season against Hometown. They jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, and stellar pitching from Louis, a lefty, and strong defense behind him helped them preserve the lead. MiniBar opened up the game by scoring three in the fifth and three more in the seventh to go up 8-0. Defensive highlights included a diving catch in center by Christina and a 4-6-3 double play, which was described as being “As beautiful as a Court Pastry box.” Hometown rallied for three in the seventh, but a second diving catch by Christina ended the game. MiniBar improved to 5-0 with the 8-3 victory while Hometown dropped to 1-4.

MiniBar also wanted to give a shoutout to Sacred Heart, as many of their players played basketball, baseball, and softball for them.

Greg Fischer of Bait & Tackle said “We’ll get our first win this week,” ahead of Bait’s matchup with the Wobblies on May 22, but unfortunately a rainout prevented Bait from having the opportunity to make that happen.

On May 29, MiniBar continued their strong play with Joe “Fish” on the mound. Bait took an early 3-1 lead but MiniBar scored the final five runs of the game. They once again relied on strong defense and pitching as they won 6-3. Also on May 29, B61 jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Record Shop.

However, the Record Shop cut the lead to 3-2 and then put up seven runs in the fifth inning with an impressive rally with two outs. They won the game 9-3.

After May, MiniBar’s impressive turnaround has them in first place at 6-0, the Wobblies are 4-1, the Record Shop is 4-2, Hometown is 1-4, B61 is 1-5, and Bait & Tackle is 0-4.

Exhibition Review: Anders Knutsson’s  The Ultimate Radical Painting

In his latest exhibition at The Wall Gallery, The Ultimate Radical Painting, Brooklyn-based artist Anders Knutsson invites viewers into a fascinating but unknown art-territory where the painting serves as a bridge between the rational mind and the spiritual. Spanning four decades of work from 1986 to 2026, the exhibition is a masterclass in how you can experience the dual character

Quinn on Books: A Brownsville Fire That Still Burns, “Livonia Chow Mein”

Review of “Livonia Chow Mein,” by Abigail Savitch-Lew Is it true what people say—you can’t go home again? My partner once remarked, “The Germany I left isn’t the same Germany I’d return to.” I’ve never left New York, and I feel just as disoriented. Abigail Savitch-Lew’s debut, “Livonia Chow Mein,” is a novel about belonging. Set in Brownsville, Brooklyn, it

Grella on Jazz: Following Miles

Miles Davis is more than a musician, he’s an icon. The aspects of that shifted through the years and eras of his life, and that continues in his afterlife—his centennial is May 26. The fashion figure has vanished from popular culture since the end of The Gap’s mid-1990s campaign showing Miles (and Jack Kerouac, Steve McQueen, and others) wearing khakis.
