SPORTS: MiniBar rules Red Hook softball, by Brian Abate

On June 2, there were two games as Bait & Tackle played MiniBar in a makeup game. As they have done all season, MiniBar relied on strong defense and pitching to keep Bait from having any big rallies. MiniBar did enough on offense to take the lead and held on for a 6-3 victory to improve to 7-0 while Bait dropped to 0-5. Additionally, the Wobblies took on Hometown, and like MiniBar, they continued their strong play. Though Hometown kept it close, the Wobblies held on for a 9-6 victory to improve to 5-1 while Hometown dropped to 1-5.

On June 6, B61, ended MiniBar’s undefeated run to start this season in a high-scoring matchup. While MiniBar has won games thanks to their strong defense and pitching B61 scored 12 runs and they were just enough for a 12-10 victory. MiniBar dropped to 7-1 while B61 improved to 2-5.

Additionally, an offensive explosion from the Record Shop helped them cruise past Bait & Tackle 17-6. The Record Shop improved to 5-2 while Bait dropped to 0-6.

On June 9, Hometown took on Bait & Tackle. After a slow start to the season, Hometown put on another impressive offensive display and shut down Bait in a 12-1 victory. Hometown improved to 2-5 while Bait fell to 0-7.

On June 12, all six teams were in action. MiniBar got back on track against the Wobblies as they once again relied on their pitching and defense. They led 1-0 late and then took advantage of a couple of defensive miscues with clutch two-out hits to take a 7-0 lead. A triple by Maggie over the left fielder’s head got the Wobblies on the board but a strikeout by Louis ended the rally and MiniBar won 7-1.

At the same time on Dovey Diamond, Hometown took an 8-5 lead over the Record Shop, but the Record Shop would not go quietly. They loaded the bases with no outs and a groundout cut the lead to 8-6. Kohl followed that up with a clutch go-ahead three-run homer. Hometown threatened in the bottom of the inning with runners on first and second but a groundout ended the game in a dramatic 9-8 win for the Record Shop.

In the nightcap at Dovey Diamond, B61 jumped out to a big early lead on Bait & Tackle thanks to a 9-run second inning. However, Bait scored seven runs in a row to cut the lead to 9-7 going into the seventh. As Bait was making a push, Michael Buscemi of Bait had his shoe explode while in a rundown. He was tagged out but finished the game despite the busted shoe. In the top of the seventh, Shawn Andrew tagged up from first to third on a deep fly ball to right and then scored on a groundout to give B61 an insurance run. Bait brought the tying run to the plate but a groundout ended the threat.

MiniBar still on top
After the games, MiniBar was 8-1, the Record Shop was 6-2, B61 was 3-5, the Wobblies were 6-2, Hometown was 2-5, and Bait was 0-8.

On June 16, Hometown bounced back from their heartbreaking loss with a strong 12-5 victory over Bait. They jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They never looked back as they used extra-base hits to tack on more runs and never allowed Bait to get a big rally going. Hometown improved to 3-5 while Bait dropped to 0-9.

There was a doubleheader on a rainy day on June 19. B61 jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over the Wobblies and they were able to play five innings before the game was called because of rain and lightning. Since the game lasted five innings it counts as a completed game which brought B61 to 4-5 while the Wobblies dropped to 6-3. At Dovey Diamond, MiniBar trailed the Record Shop 3-2 with MiniBar batting in the bottom of the 4th when the rain started. It will have to be completed at a later date.

On June 23, B61 took on Hometown despite 98-degree heat. B61 was down a couple of players and I was able to fill in thanks to Hometown kindly lending me a glove on defense. Hometown jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, relying on their pitching and defense. I managed a couple of singles before grounding out to third to end a 6-0 shutout victory for Hometown.

Hometown continued the march up in the standings and improved to 4-5 while B61 dropped to 4-6. On June 26, the Wobblies and the Record Shop were locked in a low-scoring pitcher’s duel. The Record Shop took a 3-2 lead into the 7th and a diving catch by pitcher Edan Portnoy helped them hold on and win the game. The Record Shop improved to 7-2 while the Wobblies dropped to 6-4.

Additionally, Joe “Fish” hit a three-run home run to help MiniBar jump out to an early 4-1 lead over Bait & Tackle and they never looked back. Their lefty pitcher Louis allowed just three runs and made a diving stop and flip to first as they cruised to a 10-3 victory. MiniBar improved to 9-1 while Bait fell to 0-10.

On June 30, old rivals the Wobblies and Bait played each other in a makeup game. Bait jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Wobblies threw out a runner at the plate and another runner at third to keep it close. Bait led 4-2 in the fifth, but the Wobblies rallied for three in the fifth and tacked on two more in the sixth. Down 7-4 in the seventh, Bait got a rally going with a couple of singles but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat.

Current standings
At the end of June, MiniBar is 9-1, the Record Shop is 7-2, the Wobblies are 7-4, Hometown is 4-5, B61 is 4-6, and Bait & Tackle is 0-11.
