The Red Hook Pool will reopen at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation confirmed Thursday evening. It has been closed since June 27.
“We’re excited to welcome everyone back this Saturday for swimming and to bring back our popular Adult Lap Swim program to Red Hook Pool for the rest of the summer,” NYC Parks Commissioner Tricia Shimamura wrote in a statement to the Star-Revue.
Mechanical issues forced Parks to close the pool just days before it was scheduled to open alongside the city’s other public outdoor pools. The department had previously stated it hoped to reopen in late July.
Rumors swirled on social media on Thursday, July 16, with a neighbor of the pool stating that they were seeing water in the pool, and a Parks employee claiming their colleague, who worked at the facility, had said it would reopen the coming Saturday.
Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, July 20, the pool will also serve as a site for the city’s Adult Lap Swim program.
The pool remains active as a site for free lunches, as part of a partnership between Parks and the Department of Education, according to Parks spokesperson Chris Clark. Meals are available to New Yorkers 18 and younger, and no identification or registration is required.
Red Hook Pool celebrates 90 years in use this season. The city is undertaking a $122-million renovation project of the pool and the recreation center, with construction expected to start in 2028, Clark told the Star-Revue.
