So You Didn’t Get A Reservation for Bar Bête In Time…

Getting a Valentine’s Day restaurant reservation can feel nearly as difficult as winning the affordable housing lottery in this city. Luckily, there are endless ways to treat yourself and your loved one to a fun date this weekend without even hopping on the F/G trains!

Pie and Coffee
Breakfast dates have been overlooked for too long. Take advantage of the holiday landing on the weekend by stopping at Four & Twenty Blackbirds (439 Third Ave.) for pie and lattes Saturday morning. Then swing on over to Liz’s Book Bar (315 Smith St.) to browse the store together, hand in hand.

Pie and Beer
Sure, Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain (513 Henry St.) is probably the “cutest” spot to split a sweet with your sweetie, but it’s also likely to be mobbed on Valentine’s Day. For an alternative, walk along the waterfront, stopping in the Waterfront Museum (290 Conover St.; open hours are 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., or attend Boat Banter on the Barge). Once you’ve worked up an appetite, treat your darling to key lime tarts from Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie (185 Van Dyke St.) before you both get toasty right around the corner at Red Hook Cidery.

Make Something Beautiful Together
Paint & sip classes are so 2015. If you want to impress your loved one and make something that you’ll both actually keep, sign up for a Moss & Sip class. For $70, each participant can enjoy an adult beverage (or not) while making their own moss bowl at MossBoss NYC (294 Van Brunt St.).

Bounce Off the Walls
This weekend is the Superbowl for our local candy shops! Stop into Raaka Chocolate’s factory (58 Seabring St.) and Bonbon Swedish Candy Co. (66 Degraw St.) to stock up on confections. Once you’ve had enough sugar to bounce off the walls, get a bit playful with your Valentine as you visit the Red Hook Pinball Museum (362 Van Brunt St.).

Toe Tap Together
It’s hard not to love Sunny’s Bar (253 Conover St.), but if that’s already your go-to weekend haunt, switch it up for V-Day and bring your lover to another venue. One option this Saturday is live music from Rashad Brown & The Swiftly Tilting Planet at Jalopy Tavern (317 Columbia St.; 8:00 p.m. till close).

Exhibition Review: Anders Knutsson’s  The Ultimate Radical Painting

In his latest exhibition at The Wall Gallery, The Ultimate Radical Painting, Brooklyn-based artist Anders Knutsson invites viewers into a fascinating but unknown art-territory where the painting serves as a bridge between the rational mind and the spiritual. Spanning four decades of work from 1986 to 2026, the exhibition is a masterclass in how you can experience the dual character

Quinn on Books: A Brownsville Fire That Still Burns, “Livonia Chow Mein”

Review of “Livonia Chow Mein,” by Abigail Savitch-Lew Is it true what people say—you can’t go home again? My partner once remarked, “The Germany I left isn’t the same Germany I’d return to.” I’ve never left New York, and I feel just as disoriented. Abigail Savitch-Lew’s debut, “Livonia Chow Mein,” is a novel about belonging. Set in Brownsville, Brooklyn, it

Grella on Jazz: Following Miles

Miles Davis is more than a musician, he’s an icon. The aspects of that shifted through the years and eras of his life, and that continues in his afterlife—his centennial is May 26. The fashion figure has vanished from popular culture since the end of The Gap’s mid-1990s campaign showing Miles (and Jack Kerouac, Steve McQueen, and others) wearing khakis.
