A letter from a candidate

Dear Readers,

As most of us know, elections are on Tuesday. While we often write about the doings of our local politicians, we haven’t heard from anyone specifically about this election. Except for Matthew Morgan, who is running for the City Council seat in Park Slope/Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill for a seat currently held by Shahana Hanif. This is not an endorsement, but in line with our policy of providing information to our readers. We appreciate his reaching out to us.

Here is what he says:

Matthew Morgan For City Council, by Matthew Morgan

It has become too apparent that from local to state to federal level politics politicians have become too focused on the idea of winning. They measure their success on the amount of their own ideas that they were able to push through and make policy, they do not measure their success on the actual results of that policy. That is where I differ from the batch of politicians I am running against. I have worked professionally in a corporate environment, I have volunteered my spare time in service organizations like Rotary, and neighborhood mutual aid groups. I truly believe the policies of my campaign are beneficial to all of those in our community and I believe that, because they are my own ideas, created and fledged out through personal experiences and conversation with thousands of people across the city and in the community. However I do know that I am only one person and that my policy ideas are fallible and I know that because it has happened before and it will happen again, but that is of no concern to me because I am not concerned about my ideas winning over a community, I am obsessed with finding the ideas that make the community truly better.

If you vote for me and if I win, my policy ideas are where I will ask you to meet me, and from there we can work together to find compromises, better ideas, and solutions, but I ask you to meet me there, because no matter what the cause I will be there, I will show up, and I will work because that is all I know how to do. Even if my constituents hold a “Matthew Morgan Is Horrible Rally”, I will show up, because I believe in being present and being accountable. Those are not empty words of a wannabe politician, you ask around about me in the community and they will tell you, Matthew Morgan shows up.

I am running to represent this community, because I believe in this community, because I have seen this community in action and I believe in its ability to achieve great things. My main policy is to Abolish Zoning, and I believe that removing the restrictions of government zoning mandates will allow the creative and entrepreneurial spirit of the area to thrive allowing for rational housing development, small business spaces that are affordable, and more greenspaces. I believe we should be vigilant and kick ICE out of the city because I know our community cares about immigrants and protecting them. I believe that my environmental policies like the Blue Highway Initiative, creating more mass transit, and increasing greenery will improve the safety of our streets and increase the quality of life.

I am asking you to vote for me this week, I am not asking you to believe in me, I am asking you to believe in yourselves and trust your neighbors because that is the team that will make this community better. My role as your City Council member is to lead the team, trust the team, and get the best out of the team, and that is what I have done my entire life in every position of leadership I have ever had the honor to hold, and that is what I will do again, because Matthew Morgan DELIVERS.

  1. He actually sounded reasonable until he said Abolish Zoning. Imagine just allowing developers to build whatever they want, wherever they want? It’s sort of like that now, so imagine if we deregulate it. No Thanks!
